Song Of The Week – Neutral Milk Hotel – Everything Is

Everything Is was the first recording mass-released by Neutral Milk Hotel, which at this point was largely still an outlet for the songwriting of Jeff Mangum, instead of a fully formed band. The recording was originally the second release on the fledgling Seattle label Cher Doll Records in 1994. The label in the form of a 7″, with “Everything Is” as the A side, and “Snow Song, Pt. 1″ as the B side. The first 50 7″s pressed also featured different artwork, with each sleeve being personally xeroxed by Mangum.

Noisecast #1 – Voice//Guitar

For the past few weeks I’ve been working on developing an acoustic set for my solo live performances. Ive been paying a lot of attention to what makes a song feel complete when its stripped down to nothing but vocals and acoustic guitar. No overdubs, piano, doubled vocals, strings, effects, etc. I started looking through my music library for songs by some of my favorite artists that I could reference/steal from for inspiration, and (kind-of) to my surprise, a much larger number of tracks than I would have imagined featured extra accompaniment of some kind. I actually found it pretty difficult to make this playlist flow well with the limited amount of music that fit the requirements(no live tracks/bootlegs solo performances allowed). I’m pretty happy with the result though, and I think its a pretty good showcase of just how many different things you can actually do with only one voice and one guitar.

enjoy.

The Tallest Man On Earth – The Gardner

Nick Drake – Road

The Microphones – I Felt Your Shape

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two Headed Boy

Elliott Smith – Pitseleh ( I cheated it has a piano part! it’s one of the few Elliott songs with no guitar overdubs though)

The Mountain Goats – Island Garden Song

Tom Waits – I Want You

Bright Eyes – Waste Of Paint
