How Do You Feel About All These Shitty No-Fi Bands?

Just this morning (a few minutes ago to be exact) I stumbled upon Spinner’s new song of the day, the fantastic OCD GO GO Girls, By rocking trend setters, Lovvers, and I honestly couldn’t be more excited. This is is not, of course, because this band is any good (they are terrible) but because shitty derivative no-fi bands like Lovvers are one of the main reasons behind why I started FNR, and now I have a chance to talk about how awesome they are.

Being the stupid music loving hipster that I am, a few years ago I thought It would be a great idea to move to Brooklyn. All those awesome bands!, all those great all ages venues! Optimism for the future filled my silly little hipster heart, needless to say,  I couldn’t have been more wrong. As it turns out, approximately 9/10 bands that play in Brooklyn actually suck. and approximately 1/2 of them are essentially Lovvers.

“But wait dude! Living in Brooklyn is totally still worth it because even if 9/10 bands suck there are like 109480958205 bands, which means that there are a ton of rad ones right?!”

well…kind of. You see, there are a lot of pretty cool bands that come out of BK, but the problem is that there are SO MANY shows every single night, that your chances of seeing a good band (before they’ve blown up, and people are paying attention to where they play) are slim to none. It’s not really any better than if you lived in any other major city in the US with a decent music scene. Basically BK is a total crap shoot, and the only real advantage to living in BK is that you also live in NYC, which means that pretty much every band that does a full US tour will make a stop here, so I’ll stop complaining for a little bit and get back to Lovvers…

Now, this band is called Lovvers, obviously its supposed to be ironic right? I mean, two “V’s”, they are most definitely making fun of wavves right?

Maybe…I imagine the naming of this band went something like this:

BRO A: “bro, I totally love this new band Wavves, they totally rule”

BRO B: “bro, we should totally be in a Wavves cover band, and misspell the name using two “V’s”, I think that would be totally ironic right?”

BRO A:”yeah….Uh….if people shit on us we can just say we’re trying to be ironic, that’s ironic right?….and its hip to be ironic right?….lets do it!”

BRO B:”this is great, neither of us can write lyrics, so now we can just mute them with fuzz and people wont be able tell how shitty they are”

BRO A:”I’m so stoked dude, lets do this! load up garage band right now!”

DO SHITTY NO-FI/LO-FI BANDS PISS YOU OFF?

DO YOU FEEL LIKE WRITING GOOD LYRICS IS SO PASSE?

DO YOU THINK ITS TOUGH TO FIND GOOD BANDS IN BROOKLYN?

IRONY?

INTERVIEW: GHOST MALL

Since I’ve started writing this blog,  I’ve been getting quite a few tweets & emails from bands asking me to listen to their music. Ghost mall is one of few (two so far!) bands who’s music has stood out to me. I recently got the chance to follow up & chat with Pierce (the voice behind Ghost mall), about the band’s upcoming EP, which was produced with the help of Ninjasonik’s DJ teen wolf.

New find: Drew Danburry

“What better way to get acquainted with Drew Danburry than to hear the first two tracks from his sixth album Goodnight Gary. Right, album six. The singer, songwriter, nonstop tourer (750 shows since 2005), and seemingly downcast jokester/self-archivist is also planning a companion record Goodnight Dannii, which brings the count to seven. Danburry’s been doing his thing for about eight years, ostensibly in Provo, Utah. (Or at least that’s where he’s currently residing.) I’ve put the songs in the order they appear on the record because they sound best that way: “The Religion Of Me” is a quiet acoustic exposition and “Edited” opens out to other voices assisting Danburry in his late-night retelling of a bloody dream. Like the latter’s title suggests, each of these is a snippet.” -stereogum

I think the songs sound better in the reverse order, so I’m putting them up that way. You can of course, listen to them in any order you please. “Edited” is my fav of the two, wish it were longer though.

Song of the week 2-14-2010 (Modest Mouse – Novocain Stain)

Welcome to the first ever FNR song of the week. I will be posting one song every Sunday that I think is worth talking about/hearing until I give up (or die). I’ll try to focus on new music as much as possible, but a lot of the new music I hear is not from 2009/2010 so please forgive if you’ve already heard it!

REVIEW: Wisdom Tooth – Cathedral Park.

wisdom tooth - cathedral park

“I’m waiting for the drugs to wear off / I’m waiting for the medicine to kick in/ I’m waiting for the summer to be endlessly promising again” sings 21 year old Oberlin, Ohio resident Meagan Day on album opener “Cathedral park”. Lyrics that recall Letting off the happiness-era bright eyes, talk-sung in a voice that sounds a lot like early Mirah, if not without its own distinct lilt; “I’m eternally splitting at the seems/with the way that my favorite singer sings/ with the feeling that the perfect sad song brings”.
