Lately I’ve been super into The Hold Steady’s 2006 gem, Boys And Girls In America. Recently I stumbled upon The Deluxe Edition, which features an awesome cover of the Violent Femmes classic American Music. Its Similar enough to the original to feel familiar, but different enough to avoid feeling rehashed, and though I don’t think Craig Finn Could sound any more different than Gordon Gano, he does a pretty good job filling the shoes.

“Like hyper-wordy, classic-rocking clockwork, the Hold Steady‘s fifth album– dubbed Heaven Is Whenever– is due out May 4 via Vagrant (May 3 via Rough Trade in Europe). For this record, the band re-teamed with producer Dean Baltulonis, who manned the boards on 2005′s Separation Sunday and engineered their debut, Almost Killed Me. It’s also the band’s first album since Almost Killed Me that doesn’t feature keyboardist Franz Nicolay– who left the group in September– as a full-time member.” – via p4k
Song of the Week: The Hold Steady – Citrus
I was exploring the hold steady’s back catalog when I came up on this gem of a song. I’m a huge fan of Craig Finn’s writing. I’d go as far as to say hes one of the 10 best lyricists writing music today. Stripped away of all the loud anthem rock of the hold steady, his voice is something else. Theres a painful/beautiful quality to it that I’m just totally in love with. Couple that with some amazingly sad/beautiful lyrics, and you have one hell of a song.
