Simon Joyner – The Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll – 12 – Joy Division

that crucial filament is all but spent
and soon it will be dark in my basement
my heart is waxing the slick floor again
hoping i’ll slip, and fall in love
well, she gave me the choice
to remain and rejoice or to recoil and rebel
well, papa, this gravity attack
yeah, it’s a gravity attack
and i can’t seem to carry, much less bury the past

well, your ex-girlfriend said i was a terrible mess
yeah, she’s got a real good head on her shoulders
when the singer spoke and confessed
he didn’t really smoke cigarettes,
she said her teenage brother smouldered
on a hotbed of coal in a sterile white room
underneath that joy division poster
he moaned papa, he moaned papa,
sometimes i gotta vent my spleen!
sometimes i gotta vent my spleen
when i get shattered in the heart
and scattered in the brain

well, all the medicine in these sermons
still can’t keep his brazen nose from turning
and salvation, it may come free of charge
but faith always costs him something
they say there’s nothing as sacred
as the blood between brothers
when it’s pricked from their thumbs
and exchanged beneath the covers
well, papa, my brother is gone!
yeah, my brother is gone!

so would you tell me now how it is
i’m supposed to get along?

well, you asked for a chorus but you got a refrain
yeah, it’s another sad song that moves like a train
you can’t whistle to it
but you can fast-forward through it
flick it off your shoulder like dead skin

they say my head on a plate
may curve the debate
about the unbearable high cost of living
but papa, everything falls apart!
everything falls apart
and the grass will grow
as surely as they’ll break your heart

Weakerthans – Left & Leaving

This song is amazing.

My city’s still breathing (but barely it’s true)
through buildings gone missing like teeth.
The sidewalks are watching me think about you,
sparkled with broken glass.
I’m back with scars to show.
Back with the streets I know
Will never take me anywhere but here.
The stain in the carpet, this drink in my hand,
the strangers whose faces I know.
We meet here for our dress-rehearsal to say “I wanted it this way”
Wait for the year to drown.
Spring forward, fall back down.
I’m trying not to wonder where you are.
All this time lingers, undefined.
Someone choose who’s left and who’s leaving.
Memory will rust and erode into lists of all that you gave me:
a blanket, some matches, this pain in my chest,
the best parts of Lonely, duct-tape and soldered wires,
new words for old desires,
and every birthday card I threw away.
I wait in 4/4 time,
Count yellow highway lines that you’re relying on to lead you home.

01. Son of a Gun

I was talking to some fool at a party who though nirvana was the last “original” band to come out. Got me Thinking about the Vaselines.

Some people.

I’m obsessed with this album (Icky Mettle) . I love the sound of Eric Bachman’s vocals on this record (which was their debut). It sounds like maybe he wore them out from cigarettes or something, they became really harsh and growly and more tough sounding in the later albums.

so good

the heat from the closeness of me tilting towards the sun
was storing up to ignite the night and light up
the coldness of the cave the billowy flames lit up my face
the thinning smoke hung in the branches waiting for wind
my front was warm, the cold backs of my arms
never felt the dawn, the night was long
when the real dawn came i saw it crawl over the hill
and i felt clean and shook my hair out in the light
i looked up and hurt my eyes on the painful powerful sky
i looked down and felt motion under me
i looked out across the freeway at the people flying by
and turned my head, i closed my eyes, i felt my size
i recalled my fire, and my lack of dawn
my one sided warmth, i just wanted more
but i’m small, i’m not a planet at all
i’m small, i’m small, we are all

I started this noisecast by trying to make a pop punk mix and failing miserably (the only track remaining is “Glendora”). I know that not all of these songs are “folk-punk” in the strictest sense, and you die hard folk-punkers will probably scoff at a bunch of my choices, but I selected these songs under the criteria that they all had something punk about them, and that they were acoustic, not because they were traditional anarcho-folk-punk jams (though you still get “Punx win!”).

Its loose, but I think it flows pretty well.

Bright Eyes – If Winter Ends

Rilo Kiley – Glendora

Defiance, Ohio – Grandma Song

Leftover Crack – Soon We’ll Be Dead

Violent Femmes – Out The Window

Mischief Brew – Punx Win! Electric

Okkervil River - Black

Against Me! – Joy

It’s said that Blake wrote this song about Elliott Smith after he died. The two were supposedly close friends.

pull the ripchord
the ship has lost its sail
your mama’s got a new man
your daddy always fails
and you’re eating again
at them
’cause nobody loves you

and even fancy things
have finally lost their charm
wine and diamond rings
they never get you anymore
you’re sleeping again
alone
’cause nobody loves you

they should have seen you
should have known you
should have known what it was like
to be you

so come on kid
look at what you did
I don’t know if you meant it
but you did yourself in
and I was even having a good day
when I’d found out we lost you

she said it was in the singing and the strumming
oh man I even saw it coming
